Configuring Microsoft Outlook 2016 for Windows

Overview

This article provides step-by-step instructions for setting up your email in Outlook 2016 for Windows.

Below are instructions for both Webmail/IMAP and Exchange/UOmail.

If you're not sure which email service you're using, please see our article about how to tell if you're using Webmail/IMAP or Exchange/UOmail.

Please note that UO faculty and staff are transitioning from Webmail/IMAP to Exchange/UOmail throughout 2019.

Information

For Webmail/IMAP users:

  1. Start Outlook.
  2. Choose File.
  3. Click Add Account.
  4. Select the radio button next "Manual setup or additional server types" at the bottom of the page
  5. Click "Next".
  6. Choose "POP or IMAP".
  7. Fill out the information:
    1. Server Information:
      1. Account type = IMAP
      2. Inocming mail server = imap.uoregon.edu
      3. Outgoing mail server (SMTP) = smtp.uoregon.edu
    2. Logon Information
      1. Username = your Duck ID (first part of email before @ symbol).
      2. Password = your password for your email
      3. Check "Remember password"
  8. Click on "More Settings..." at the bottom.
    1. Go to the "Outgoing Server" tab.
    2. Check "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication"
    3. Select radio button "Use same settings as my incoming mail server"
    4. Go to the "Advanced" tab.
    5. Incoming server (IMAP) = 993
    6. Use the following type of encrypted connection = SSL/TLS
    7. Outgoing server (IMAP) = 587
    8. Use the following type of encrypted connection = TLS
      1. Sometimes using 'STARTTLS' is necessary for Outlook 2019 clients
  9. Click "OK" at the bottom (this will close the window).
  10. Click "Next" and this will run send and receive tests. Click "OK" and then "Finish".
  11. You inbox will now populate and you should see your messages.

For Exchange/UOmail users:

If you are setting up an account in Outlook for the first time:

  1. Start Outlook
  2. Enter your full University email address "duckid"@uoregon.edu and click "Connect"
  3. Select the "Exchange" option
  4. Click "Allow"
  5. Enter your password, check the "Remember my credentials" box and click "OK"
  6. Uncheck the box next to "Set up Outlook Mobile on my phone, too" and click "OK"

If you already have an account set up in Outlook:

  1. Start Outlook
  2. Click "File"
  3. Click "Add Account"
  4. Enter your full University email address "duckid"@uoregon.edu and click "Connect"
  5. Select the "Exchange" option
  6. Click "Allow"
  7. Enter your password, check the "Remember my credentials" box and click "OK"
  8. Uncheck the box next to "Set up Outlook Mobile on my phone, too" and click "OK"
