UO Secure and eduroam setup FAQ

Yes. This helps with the configuration process by allow the installer application to work properly.

• Why it asks: The macOS/iOS Local Network permission prompt is triggered because the application needs to scan and communicate with local network infrastructure to provision your device.
• What it does: It uses this access to identify the necessary local network parameters, detect the appropriate wireless controller, and safely install the WPA2-Enterprise/802.1X wireless profile and digital certificates.
• Privacy: This is a standard system permission required for the automated network setup tool to function. It does not monitor your private network traffic or look at your personal files.
  • If you deny this permission, the SecureW2 JoinNow wrapper will fail to configure your Wi-Fi, and your device will not be able to connect to the UO Secure network.

Yes. Allow the request.

• What it does: It helps to complete the configuration process.
• What it looks like: When Allow is selected, you will be redirected to authenticate with your Duck ID username and password using Shibboleth SSO.

Only UO affiliates (i.e., faculty, staff, student, GE, etc.) who will need access to wireless internet while on campus.

• If you are not planning on coming to campus to use your device(s), you do not need to follow this process.

• UO faculty, staff, and students: Use either eduroam or UO Secure—our two secure networks—for your computers, laptops, smartphones, and tablets.
  • These two networks now work the same while you're at the UO.
  • Eduroam offers a big bonus: it lets you connect to Wi-Fi at thousands of other institutions in the U.S. and around the world.
  • (You can use UO Guest temporarily to install the software for eduroam and UO Secure.)
• Residents of university housing: Use ResNet IOT for smart TVs and game consoles.
• Visitors from eduroam-participating universities: Use eduroam.
• Other visitors: Use UO Guest.

• No. You can install the software on your devices from anywhere!
• All you need is a network or cellular connection.

• First install the software on your device. Our onboarding tool supports most common devices and will help ensure your device is securely and properly configured.
• After that, choose the eduroam network or UO Secure network when you’re on campus.

• Off campus: This is normal, and your device should connect automatically when you come to campus. (The error message may also say your password may be incorrect—which may be true if you get to campus and your device doesn't connect automatically; see below.)
• On campus: Your password is likely incorrect. You may need to start the process over again, or visit the Technology Service Desk for help.

Yes, it's safe to trust SecureW2.

• SecureW2 installs the certificates needed to connect to UO Secure and eduroam.
• It verifies your identity using your UO account and Duo.
• It doesn't monitor your activity, access personal files, install tracking software, provide remote access, or allow remote wiping of your device.
• UO has used SecureW2 for many years, like many other universities.

• If you are able to connect to the UO Secure or eduroam network while on campus, you did it!
• If you were unable to connect, you will have to try the process again.
