Setting Up Email: Android Mail Application

Depending on which version of the Gmail app you are using, instructions may vary slightly. Our guide follows the most recent version of the Gmail application (2019.06.09). As a result, updating your Gmail app before proceeding may make our process easier to follow.

Webmail

  1. Open the Gmail app.
  2. If you already have an account set up, tap your profile picture in the top right corner. Otherwise, select Add Account and skip to step four.
  3. Tap Add another account.
  4. Click Other. A new window will appear.
  5. Enter your full email address and tap Next.
  6. Type in your email password, which is the same as your Duck ID password. Tap Next. 
  7. Under Incoming server settings, fill out the following information, then tap Next:
    •      "Username" will be your Duck ID (your e-mail address without the @uoregon.edu).
    •      "Password" will be your Duck ID password
    •      "Server" needs to be imap.uoregon.edu
    •      "Port" needs to be set to 993
    •      "Security type" needs to be set to SSL/TLS
  8. Under "Outgoing Server Settings", fill out the following information, then tap "Next":     
    • "Username" will be your Duck ID (your e-mail address without the @uoregon.edu).
    • "Password" will be your Duck ID password.
    • "SMTP server" needs to be smtp.uoregon.edu
    • "Port" needs to be set to 587
    • "Security type" needs to be set to STARTTLS
  9. Choose how frequently your mail syncs, whether you want notifications, whether you want your emails to sync, and whether you want attachments to automatically download when connected to Wi-Fi. Then click Next.
  10. Make sure your name is correct and click Next.
  11. Push the home button and go to the Mail app.
  12. Send a test email to yourself. If you are able to send and receive the email then everything was set up correctly.

Updating the Password

  1. Open the Settings app.  
  2. Tap Accounts.
  3. Select your university email account.
  4. Tap Account settings.
  5. Select your university email account from the sidebar.
  6. Tap Incoming settings
  7. In the "Password" field, delete the existing password and enter in your new one.
  8. Tap Done.

Exchange

  1. Open the Gmail app.
  2. If you already have an account set up, tap your profile picture in the top right corner. Otherwise, select Add Account and skip to step four.
  3. Tap Add another account.
  4. Select Exchange and Office 365. A new window will appear.
  5. Enter your full email address and tap Next.
  6. Type in your email password, which is the same as your Duck ID password. Tap Next. 
  7. Enter the following information into the available fields, then tap Next:
    1. "Domain\Username" will be your Duck ID (your e-mail address without the @uoregon.edu).
    2. "Password" will be your Duck ID password.
    3. "Client certificate" will be None
    4. "Server" will be sync.uoregon.edu
    5. "Port" needs to be set to 443.
    6. "Security type" needs to be set to SSL/TLS
  8. It will ask about "Remote security administration." Tap "OK."
  9. Choose what will sync, how long it will sync and how much many message you want to see, then tap Next.
  10. It will ask you to activate permissions. Tap Activate.
  11. Choose an account name. This is only for you so you can name it whatever you like. By default it will be your email address, then tap Done.

Updating the Password

  1. Open the Settings app.  
  2. Tap Accounts.
  3. Select your university email account.
  4. Tap Account settings.
  5. Select your university email account from the sidebar.
  6. Tap Incoming settings
  7. In the "Password" field, delete the existing password and enter in your new one.
  8. Tap Done.

UOmail

  1. Open the Gmail app.
  2. If you already have an account set up, tap your profile picture in the top right corner. Otherwise, select Add Account and skip to step four.
  3. Tap Add another account.
  4. Select Exchange and Office 365. A new window will appear.
  5. Enter your full email address and tap Set up manually.
  6. Type in your email password, which is the same as your Duck ID password. Tap Next. 
  7. Enter the following information into the available fields, then tap Next:
    1. "Email" will be your UO email address
    2. "Password" will be your Duck ID password.
    3. "Client certificate" will be None
    4. "Domain\Username" will be your UO email address
    5. "Server" will be outlook.office365.com
    6. "Port" needs to be set to 443.
    7. "Security type" needs to be set to SSL/TLS
  8. It may ask about "Remote security administration" or that "Gmail needs access to this phone". Tap "OK".
  9. It will ask you to activate a device admin app. Review the permissions and tap Activate.
  10. Choose an account name. This is only for you so you can name it whatever you like. By default it will be your email address, then tap Done.
