Sound output does not work on Dell laptop

UO-managed Dell laptop

Description

The laptop cannot output sound from any application and there are no listed output devices in sound settings, including the built-in speakers. Input sound works just fine through the built-in microphone.

Resolution

Audio issue resolved after re-installing the driver from Dell's website.

  1. Go to the Dell Support website.
  2. Enter your computer's seven-digit alphanumeric service tag into the product identifier field and click Search. This tag is often on the bottom of laptops in small font next to ST: and a QR code.
  3. On the left side of the screen, select Drivers and Downloads.
  4. In the center of the screen, under Find Specific Drivers, chose Select Drivers.
  5. In the category drop-down menu, select Audio.
  6. Download the listed audio driver for your device.
  7. Double-click the downloaded file and follow the prompts to install the driver.
