Microsoft 365: How to Install Microsoft Office Applications

Overview

Microsoft Office 365 refers to a group of software applications and services, including the Microsoft Office suite. This page provides instructions for using Office 365 to install the Microsoft Office applications on the following platforms:

  • Windows and macOS
  • Mobile (Android, iOS, Windows)

Considerations Before Installing

  • If you are upgrading from another version of Office, it is recommended that you uninstall the older version of Microsoft Office first. 
  • You can verify how many licensed machines are in use under your account, as well as deactivate a machine, by logging in to the Office 365 Software settings page. You will be required to sign in with your full UO email address and password.
  • You must have at least one available license to install Office. 

Installation instructions for personal or unmanaged computers

Windows and macOS

  1. Navigate to the UO Microsoft Office 365 portal at office.uoregon.edu.
  2. Sign in with your full UO email address and password.
  3. Click on Install Office (in the upper-right corner), then Office 365 Apps from the drop-down menu that appears. This will download the Office 365 Installer to your computer.

  4. Run the Office 365 installer.
    • If prompted, click Continue and Install.
    • If you encounter the error "Couldn't Install Office,click Install 64-bit and the installation should continue.
  5. Once the installation is complete, Open Office 365.
  6. Sign in with your UO email and password.

Mobile

  1. Open the App StoreGoogle Play Store, or Windows Store on the device you wish to download Office 365.
  2. Search for Microsoft Office.
  3. Click Install.
    • You may be prompted to sign in to the respective app store with your Personal Account. Do not use your UO email.
  4. Once the application has been installed, select Open.
  5. Sign in to the application with your UO email and password.
    • If you have not signed in to a Microsoft account on your device before, follow the on-screen first set-up instructions.
    • If you have signed in to a Microsoft account on your device before, select the Avatar Icon in the upper left-hand corner of the application. There, select Connect Account. Then, sign in with your UO email and password.
  6. If you are on a Phone:
    1. Select the Avatar Icon in the upper left-hand corner of the application.
    2. Select either Explore Other Microsoft Apps (Android) or Microsoft Apps (iOS).
    3. Select Install on the applications you wish to have on your device.
      • This will open the store and bring you to the page for the application you chose. Similar to when you installed the Office 365 application, select Install in the store, then Open when the installation is complete. When the applications open, follow the onscreen setup steps.
  7. If you are on a Tablet:
    1. Select the Candy Box Icon (a 3x3 grid of dots) in the lower left-hand corner of the application.
    2. Select Install on the applications you wish to have on your device.
      • This will open the store and bring you to the page for the application you chose. Similar to when you installed the Office 365 application, select Install in the store, then Open when the installation is complete. When the applications open, follow the onscreen setup steps.

Installation Instructions for Managed UO-owned computers

  1. To update your Microsoft Office on a managed, UO-owned computer first open Software Center
  2. Then search for Office 365. 
  3. Then you can just press install. 

Please note - Visio and Project users will need to upgrade their license to Visio 365/Project 365 version.  Please contact us if you need to purchase a license for Visio or Project.
