Overview
Pope Tech's Alternative Formats feature is automatically available in all Canvas courses. It allows students to convert Canvas pages and linked files into other formats like Braille, MP3, eBook, and Word, so they can access different content options to meet their needs and preferences.
This built-in Canvas feature is available to all UO students. You can select the Alternative Formats icon next to a content item (page, module, etc.) and be presented with a range of options for text and audio formats. You can then choose to have the converted item emailed to you or downloaded.
Note: Pope Tech Alternative Formats are not for making content accessible. If you find the document is not accessible, you need to talk to the course instructor.
How to use Pope Tech Alternative Formats for document conversion
- Navigate to an area of the Canvas site in which content items are available, such as Modules, Pages, etc.
- Across from the name of the item you wish to convert, select the Alternative Formats icon to begin the conversion process. You will need to give one-time permission for Pope Tech to connect to Canvas.
- Depending on the type of file you are converting, you will see different options in the File dialog box appear. For example, if you are converting a Canvas Page to a new format, you should select Page content.
- Select the Conversion Type.
- Adjust the Conversion Parameters and select the format to which you would like the file converted.
- Select Email or Download, depending on whether you would like to have the file emailed to you or downloaded directly. Note: the larger the original file, the longer the conversion process will take.
Please Note: Students who require alternative formats of course materials due to a disability should work directly with the Accessible Education Center (AEC).
