How to enable FileVault

Overview

Learn how to enable FileVault to encrypt the information on your UO-managed Mac.

FileVault encrypts the data on your startup disk so that unauthorized users can’t access your information.

For UO-owned managed Macs

Please Note: This operation requires an immediate restart. Be sure you are prepared to restart before beginning.
  1. In Finder, go to Software Center
  2. Search for Enable FileVault
    (Don't see this in Software Center? Search for the Recon task and click Recon. Wait for the task to run, then search for Enable Filevault again. If you still do not see it, submit a ticket request with Desktops & Devices Support)

  3. Click the Encrypt button to begin.
  4. A new window will be displayed, with additional information. To proceed (remember this will trigger an immediate restart) press the Encrypt button to confirm.Image of Software Center, depicting the next step of Filevault Encryption.   5. Your computer will need a reboot after running this process. 
  6. After rebooting, and logging back in, the following dialog indicating you must enable FileVault will be displayed, select Enable Now.

  7. You will be presented with a short countdown timer. This should only take around a minute.

  8. Press OK to start the process.
  9. Encryption will continue in the background while you use your computer.

Your Mac is now encrypted with FileVault.
