Overview
All residents living in university residence halls and apartments have access to the Internet at no extra cost, but gaming consoles must connected physically by an Ethernet cable and registered in order to connect to the UO network.
How to register your console
Physically connect the console
All gaming consoles must be physically connected. In all residence halls (excluding Hamilton complex), a wireless access point is located in each room. For Hamilton residence, jacks ending in B and C are active. Below is a picture of what the access point looks like. An Ethernet cable (at least Cat 5e) will be needed to connect from the console Ethernet jack to one of the available jacks on the access point.
The far left jack labeled Pass-Thru will have a red or orange plug in it. Only LAN3, LAN2, and PSE-LAN1 are available.
Find the MAC address
PlayStation
- Go to Settings.
- Select Network.
- Select View Connection Status.
- Note: the MAC Address listed as LAN Cable.
Xbox
- Go to Settings.
- Select Network.
- Select Advanced Settings.
- Note: the MAC address listed as Wired MAC.
Nintendo Switch
Nintendo Switches have a variety of ways to connect to the network. Newer Switch docks come with a dedicated Ethernet port, while older ones only have a USB-A connection. The Switch itself has a USB-C connection.
- If you plan to only use the Switch without a dock, then a USB-C Ethernet adapter will be needed.
- In cases where a dock will be used, you may need a USB-A to Ethernet adapter.
Please Note: Only certain adapters work with the Nintendo Switch, the adapter must use the AX88179 chip set.
In all cases, the wired MAC address of the Switch must be registered. To find the wired MAC address:
- Attach your Nintendo Switch to the TV dock and plug in your USB Ethernet adapter into a free USB port on the dock, OR plug your USB-C adapter directly into the Switch.
- From the Switch’s Home screen select System Settings.
- In the System Settings menu select Internet from the sidebar.
- Select the Internet Settings menu, then choose Wired Connection.
- Note: The Wired MAC Address will only show if the Switch successfully recognizes the adapter.
- Make note of the MAC address listed as LAN Adapter MAC Address.
