Overview
The University of Oregon's virtual private network (UO VPN) allows you to securely connect to the UO campus network from home or any other non-campus internet service.
It is available to all university-affiliated people for connecting to campus resources from any off-campus location.
Installing UO VPN
For a desktop or laptop
- Visit the UO VPN site at https://uovpn.uoregon.edu
- Log in with your Duck ID and password
- Follow the on-screen installation instructions
For a mobile device
Using UO VPN
Connecting to UO VPN
- Open the Cisco Secure Client program
- Use the Start Menu (Windows) or Spotlight (Mac) to search for the program
- A small window will appear. Make sure it is set to connect to uovpn.uoregon.edu
- After pressing Connect, a browser window will open up and direct you to a Microsoft login screen.
- Enter your full UO email address then select Next
- In the next window, enter your Duck ID password.
- You will be redirected to use two-step login (Duo). Select the second factor of your choice to proceed.
- You may see a Microsoft window that asks if you want to sign-in fewer times, select either button to proceed. You will need to authenticate every time.
- Upon successful login, you will see the message: You have successfully authenticated. You may now close this browser tab. Close the tab or window.
Connecting via split tunnel to UO VPN
This method is useful for when you are using VPN-protected resources in conjunction with other services that don't require it. For example, this is the case when conducting a Teams or Zoom meeting while needing access to certain UO Libraries resources, Banner, or DuckDocs.
Please Note: This method is advisable only when an online meeting as this improves the meeting and call quality while accessing VPN-protected resources. Use this sparingly.

VPN Connection Confirmation
To confirm you are connected to VPN, you can go to this website hosted by UO Libraries.
Disconnecting from UO VPN
To disconnect from the VPN, open the Cisco Secure Client application and click Disconnect. You will then be taken to a page confirming you have disconnected.
When to use UO VPN
Use UO VPN when you need to access resources that are limited to campus networks only. Examples include:
- Certain UO Libraries resources, such as journal articles and other electronic resources.
- Banner
- DuckDocs (OnBase)
- File shares (network drives) from departmental or campus file servers
- Administrative access for IT staff to systems and servers (e.g. RDP, SSH)
- Campus GIS
When not to use UO VPN
You do not need to use UO VPN to access resources that are available from anywhere in the world. Examples include:
- UOmail
- Canvas
- DuckWeb
- Office 365
- OneDrive
- Microsoft Teams
- Zoom
