Installing McAfee Endpoint Security for Windows (for unmanaged devices)

Question

How do I install McAfee Endpoint Security antivirus software on a Windows computer?

Solution

Note: Be sure that you do not have any other active antivirus program running on your computer before installing McAfee Endpoint Security. Running any two virus protection programs will result in the two of them fighting over resources, making the computer slower and potentially making the computer crash while running typical applications. Exception: If you're currently using McAfee VirusScan Enterprise, you can proceed with installing Endpoint Security. It will remove the older software as part of the new installation process.

Installing

  1. Download McAfee from the UO Software Center:
    1. Visit the UO Software Center
    2. Login using your Duck ID and password
    3. Navigate to the McAfee software entry
    4. Download the McAfee Endpoint Security version for unmanaged use and for your operating system: Windows
  2. Extract the ZIP file containing the McAfee software
  3. Navigate into the McAfee Endpoint Security folder that was extracted
  4. Run the installer setupEP.exe (the .exe may be hidden depending on your settings)
    • User Account Control may prompt you for administrator permission, allow it to make changes to your device
  5. The License agreement for McAfee Endpoint Security will be displayed, Accept the agreement to proceed to the next step
  6. The McAfee installer will scan for incompatible products. Click Continue to proceed to the next step
    • If McAfee detects incompatible software, resolve this before attempting to continue with the install
  7. The McAfee installer will now present options for what modules to install and where to install it, then click Install
    1. Select the modules you wish to install:
      • Firewall - The firewall protects your computer against malicious network connections
      • Threat Prevention - The main anti-malware module allows scanning your system
      • Adaptive Threat Protection - Adds additional features such as reputation-based file handling
      • Web Control - The set of extensions adds filtering to your web browser
    2. Select the location you want to install the program
      • The default location is usually acceptable
  8. Wait for the install to finish
  9. McAfee Endpoint Security is now installed
