Dell BIOS update stuck at 0% progress

Tags windows dell

Issue

Dell BIOS update was initiated via Software Center and the computer rebooted, but the update was stuck at 0% for several weeks. Warning on screen was "Do not power down your system".

Environment

UO managed Dell desktop

Description

I manually initiated the Dell BIOS update that was pending. The update started, but did not complete. The monitor now says, "Updating your firmware. Do not power down your system." Many documents that I need for my work are on the hard drive.

Resolution

The following steps should not be taken without consultation with your regional USS support team. Incorrect steps and/or a misdiagnosis of the issue can cause permanent damage to your device.

  1. Remove any extraneous devices connected to your computer. You should only need your mouse, keyboard, display cable, power cable, and Ethernet cable. Removing unnecessary devices can potentially unblock the update. If it doesn't make progress after one to two minutes, proceed to step 2.
  2. Attempt to shut down the computer by holding the power button for 15-20 seconds.
  3. If that doesn't work, unplug the power cable from the desktop, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
  4. Log back into the device and navigate back to Software Center app. Open the Operating Systems tab in Software Center.
  5. Retry the update.
  6. If the second attempt fails, USS staff will need to suspend encryption and manually install the update from Dell's website.
