macOS Open PDF File

Issue

A PDF file opens on Windows machines in one way using Adobe Acrobat but not on macOS machines in the same way.

Environment

Managed MacBook laptop running macOS.

Description

(summary from a customer)

In my file share, when I got to open up certain files that are emails, it says I have to open in Adobe Reader or some other Adobe application. I use a Mac laptop, my colleagues can open the file and look at it straight away on their Windows PC.

Resolution

(from the technician)

I was able to recreate the view your colleague has on their Windows machine, and macOS does have a similar view, although it is a column on the left-hand side instead of the top.

This is due to Acrobat creating a new version of their software where they did not include this feature. You are currently on the new version and your colleagues are using the old version.

Switching back to the old version of Acrobat includes this feature on both Windows and Mac. You can enable this view by launching Acrobat.

  1. Select View in the top menu bar.
  2. Select Disable new Acrobat.
  3. Close out of the program.
  4. Next time, when you open the file, you will have a column on the left-hand side.
