Toggling between Teams classic and the new Teams app

Overview

Learn how to use the toggle between the Microsoft Teams classic app and the new Teams app.

  • Microsoft is moving to a new version of the Teams app for laptop and desktop computers. It can be toggled on or off in the Teams interface using the directions below.
  • The new Teams app is currently optional through February 13, 2024. A UO-wide switch to the new version will occur February 14, 2024. Information Services will aim to provide the UO community with as much notice as possible about that.

Considerations

Note: Since this is an early release of the new Teams application, there are some known issues that Microsoft is aware of and are being addressed. Please refer to the list of known issues from Microsoft.
  • This toggle may not appear for all Teams classic users right away.
    • If you see the Try the new Teams toggle in your Teams app, then you can proceed if you choose.
    • If you don't see it, try logging out and logging back in again. If you still don't see it, go to the If the toggle doesn't work (for Windows users) section below.
  • You may see an EA icon on your profile, it means early access. It might appear and disappear over the coming weeks since the new Teams application is available to try.

Please Note: Screenshots were taken with the macOS version of Teams classic and the new Teams. The locations described below will work for both Windows and macOS as they are identical.

To switch the new Teams app in Windows or macOS, use the Try the new Teams toggle switch in the top left of your Teams window.

Try the new Teams toggle switch.

Selecting the toggle will start a series of steps:

  1. It will trigger the download of the new Teams app. Follow the prompts to install the application.
    1. If you don't have the proper access to install applications to your computer, please submit a request to your IT support for assistance.
  2. Upon opening the app, the new Teams app will ask you to sign in with your full UO email and password, as before.
  3. Login may trigger a number of message windows from the new Teams app, asking for access to your microphone and camera, and to record your screen. Select Go to Settings for each window and ensure that Microsoft Teams (work or school) is allowed access.

Fixing a nonfunctional toggle (Windows only)

If you see the toggle but it's grayed out, you can take the following steps to get access to the new version of Teams.

For UO-managed Windows computers

Follow these steps on computers that are managed by UO IT staff.

  1. Open to the Software Center app on your computer.
  2. Find and install the UO - Teams - Clear Cache app, then run it to fix the toggle issue.

Follow these steps on personal computers and UO-owned computers that you manage yourself. (You'll need administrative privileges to make the changes.)

  1. Go to Microsoft's Teams app download webpage.
  2. Select the Download new Teams button.
    1. You know you have the right version if you see the download as an MSIX file instead of an EXE file.
  3. Install the new Teams application by following the prompts.
