Learn how caller ID works in Microsoft Teams.
How does caller ID work?
Caller ID works by transmitting the phone number and any additional information (e.g., name, city of origin) of an incoming call.
If you happen to have the incoming phone number saved to your contacts, it will show that information instead.
Caller ID consistency in your contacts list
Depending on how a phone number is stored in your contacts list, the caller ID might show seemingly incorrect information. The issue is how the number is stored.
Microsoft Teams uses the International Telecommunication Union - Telecommunication (ITU-T) E.164 standard for displaying phone numbers. When you're saving a phone number to your contacts, we recommend that you use the following format for entering it:
- +[country code] [subscriber number with area code/national destination code]
- For example: +15413461000 or +1 541-346-1000 or +1 (541) 346-1000
This will ensure that caller ID is properly displaying the information through Teams.

Please Note: Pop-up notifications will appear in the lower-right corner for Windows users and the upper-right corner for macOS users.
From UO contacts
When you are receiving calls from UO colleagues, you will see a pop-up notification showing their name, their Teams avatar, and a choice on how you would like to answer.
You can choose from answering with video, audio, or to decline the call. Declined calls will be routed to voicemail.
From individuals outside of UO
When you are receiving calls from callers external to UO, you will see a pop-up notification showing their phone number and either their name or the city of origin depending upon the carrier or incoming caller settings (i.e., blocking caller ID transmission, from a business line, etc.).
You can choose to answer the call or decline it. Declined calls will be routed to voicemail.
From call queues
When you are receiving calls from callers routed through a call queue, you will see a pop-up notification showing their phone number, either their name or the city of origin depending upon the carrier, and a banner above it that indicates that the call is coming through a call queue.

Your caller ID on outbound calls
When calling from Teams, only your UO phone number will appear. Your name will only appear to the recipient if it is saved in their contact list.
