Connecting to Home/Groups file shares

Overview

Learn how to connect to Home/Groups file shares (also known as the O and P drives).

Access requirements

Access is granted upon request to Duck ID accounts of staff members within the following departments and is restricted to the campus network:

Off-campus users should be connected to the campus VPN.

Connection information

Windows desktops

  • Windows desktop computers will automatically connect to the O and P drive. Access is given to your account.
  • For submitting access requests, use the File Shares & Mapped Drive Request service page.

Windows laptops and tablets

  • Windows laptops and tablets will not automatically connect to the O drive. This is intentional, to improve start-up times.
  • If you are located on campus and connected to the campus Wi-Fi, you will be able to connect to the O and P drives without issue. Shortcuts can be created on the desktop to get to those drives.

Making a shortcut

Making an O / Home drive shortcut

  1. Right-click on the Desktop and Select New shortcut
  2. In the location box, paste in \\sa-storage1\home\<duckid>
  3. Click Next
  4. Give it the name O Drive then, click Finish

Making a P / Groups drive shortcut

  1. Right-click on the Desktop and Select New shortcut
  2. In the location box, paste in \\sa-storage1\groups
  3. Click Next
  4. Give it a name like P Drive then, click Finish

Other ways to connect

We recommend the use of Remote Desktop Services (SA-Remote) or users that are off-campus. Users can login to the server and have all their drives and programs setup already.

Apple devices and Macs

  • Apple devices that are enrolled in Jamf Pro (MacBooks and iMacs) are automatically connected to sa-storage1 upon login via either a script or configuration profile.
  • For iPad users that wish to access share drives, we recommend that they put their required files onto their OneDrive through Office 365 and access it through their OneDrive app on the iPad.

For authorized users on computers that are not configured (home users or multiple departments)

We generally recommend the use of Remote Desktop Services (SA-Remote) for users that are off-campus. Users can log in to the server and have all their drives and programs set up already.

Collaborators connecting to P/Groups drive

We have several departments that collaborate with non-Student Life users, on non-Student Life computers. Here are the general instructions for that.

For unsupported collaborators that aren't using a configured computer, they will need to follow some steps to connect.

  1. You need to be on campus or connect to UO VPN
  2. You need to connect to SA-STORAGE1

Windows Users

  1. Click the Windows icon and in the search box, type in \\sa-storage1\GROUPS
  2. Login name: Your Duck ID
  3. Password: Your Duck ID password

Mac Users

  1. From Finder, click Go, then Connect to server
  2. In the Server Address bar, type in cifs://sa-storage1.uoregon.edu
  3. Login name: Your Duck ID
  4. Password: Your Duck ID password

If you have an error logging in, you should try your username in this format:

  • Login name: AD\Your Duck ID
