SPF and DKIM for Third-Party Mail Senders

Tags spf dkim

Overview

When using third-party mail senders to send out mass email communications on behalf of an @uoregon.edu address, there is an increased likelihood that email providers will consider those emails as potential spam. This is due to the fact that the email providers can see that the messages are coming from mail servers that are not associated with the University of Oregon.

There are a number of protocols that email providers use to validate whether email is authentic, two of which are SPF and DKIM. Both protocols are used to validate that the server sending the messages has been approved by UO to send mail on behalf of the university.

In order to add SPF or DKIM records for those third-party senders, Information Services needs to add network configuration records based on information that those third-party senders provides.

Information

How can I get an SPF record added for my third-party mail sender?

The third-party sender will need to provide you with the list addresses of the servers that they send mail from. You will then need to provide Information Services with that list of addresses on the Domain Name Services Request service page.

How can I get a DKIM record added for my third-party mail sender?

The third-party sender will need to provide you with a list address pairs. These pairs include one address that will be on the UO domain and the other points to one of the third-party's servers. You will then need to provide Information Services with that list address pairs on the Domain Name Services Request service page.
