Summary

This article explains how third-party app approval works when using a University of Oregon account. It also describes what users need to do, possible outcomes, and typical timelines for approval decisions.

Body

Overview

When signing into a third‑party app with your uoregon.edu account, you may be prompted with an Approval required pop‑up to request approval. This appears when the app is requesting permissions that the University of Oregon’s security policy does not allow end users to grant.

Requesting approval routes your request to reviewers with the Digital Work Experience team, who will evaluate the application and notify you of the decision.

Why you’re seeing this

The third-party application is asking for elevated Microsoft 365 permissions, such as reading your profile or accessing your calendar. Some permissions, especially those involving broad data access, require administrator approval. This is done to protect institutional and user data and to ensure that these apps meet UO security and compliance standards.

What you should do

Fill out the justification section and briefly explain your use case or business need, and who will be using the app. You will receive an email once the Digital Work Environment team approves, denies, or needs more information

Possible Outcomes

  • Approved: Digital Work Environment has granted access to the application.
  • Approved with Restrictions: UO may limit access to certain users or apply other restrictions.
  • Denied: If the application permissions are denied, you will receive an explanation.
Note: Enterprise Applications are reviewed weekly, evaluated based on risk and compliance.
  • Low Risk and compliant apps are typically reviewed  approved within seven days.
  • Medium to high-risk apps that require more thorough review may take longer.
