Virtual Computer Labs

Summary

Information about UO's virtual computer labs, including how to access them and what software is available.

Body

Overview

The UO virtual computer lab is available to all university-affiliated students, faculty and staff. Just like the physical computer labs, it may be used for completion of coursework and general education. The virtual lab offers a large suite of software, with much of the same software you would find in open computer labs such as at the Knight Library or the Social Sciences Instructional Labs (SSIL), or from departmental computer labs from the School of Journalism and Communication and the College of Design.

The UO-Open Lab is a 60-seat space, and is immediately available to all users upon login. Support for the UO Virtual Lab is offered during business hours, during the regular academic sessions. If you have an urgent need for access to software that is not working correctly in the UO Virtual Lab using the physical campus labs will be the most expedient way to fulfill your needs.

Accessing the Service

UO faculty and students may access the service by following these steps:

  1. Go to the Virtual Computer Lab Portal
  2. Log in with your Duck ID and your password
  3. Click on UO-Open Lab
  4. Please wait while the system sets up your virtual computer—you’ll see a Preparing Windows message

Alternate access for regular users

If you are using the computer lab regularly, it may be useful for you to use the Horizon Client application instead of the web application to connect to the lab. To install that application:

  1. Go to the Virtual Computer Lab Portal
  2. Do NOT log in. Instead, navigate to the bottom of the page, and select Download the Horizon Client.
  3. You will be directed to a list of VMware Horizon clients. Please download and install the version that matches your device's operating system, following the vendor's instructions.
  4. Once you have installed VMware Horizon Client, launch the application. Select New Server
  5. Enter the name of the Connection Server: vdi.uoregon.edu
  6. Enter your Duck ID and your password

Available Software

The Virtual Computer Lab Portal runs Microsoft Windows 10. Software for macOS or other operating systems is not supported.  Software in the UO Virtual Lab is updated prior to the start for Fall term.
