Overview

ArcGIS is a geographic information system (GIS) for working with maps and geographic information. It can be used for:

  • Creating and visualizing maps.
  • Compiling geographic data.
  • Analyzing mapped information.
  • Sharing and discovering geographic information.
  • Using maps and geographic information in a range of applications.
  • Managing geographic information in a database.

ArcGIS Pro is available for download from either the Software Center app on USS-managed computers or ArcGIS Online – instructions for both methods are provided below. ArcGIS Pro is also available in most campus computer labs and the UO Virtual Lab. Students, faculty, and staff are allowed to download and use ArcGIS on UO-owned and personal computers; however, the software may only be used for educational or research purposes only – commercial and for-profit uses are not allowed.

ArcGIS Desktop (a.k.a. ArcMap) Sunset: As of July 1st, 2024, ESRI has sunset the previous generation of ArcGIS (known as either "ArcGIS Desktop" or "ArcMap"). ESRI is making this change across all of its educational customers. It is recommended that users of ArcMap switch to the ArcGIS Pro app instead, or utilize the cloud features available on ArcGIS Online. Instructions for downloading and installing ArcGIS Pro are provided below.

The following topics are covered in this article:

Log Into ArcGIS Online

To use the online version of ArcGIS Pro, or download the installer for the desktop version of ArcGIS Pro, you'll need to log into ArcGIS Online:

  1. Go to the UO ArcGIS Online login page.
  2. Click the University of Oregon button.
    1. If you do not see a button labeled "University of Oregon":
      1. Click Your ArcGIS organization's URL
      2. Enter uo-online into the form field that appears
      3. Click Continue
      4. If desired, check the box next to Remember this URL so your browser remembers this information on future visits
      5. Select Click here to Log into University of Oregon.
  3. When prompted, authenticate using your Duck ID and password.

Installing ArcGIS Pro

Operating System Compatibility: Currently, ArcGIS products are only compatible with the Windows OS (though the License Manager can also run on Linux). See ArcGIS Pro System Requirements for the specific system requirements.

There are two ways to download and install ArcGIS Pro to your computer depending on whether your computer is: A) managed by User Support Services (USS); or B) either non-USS-managed or a personal device:

Installing ArcGIS on a USS-managed computer

  1. Open the Software Center app on your computer (searchable via the Search bar on the taskbar or at the top of the Start Menu).
  2. Search for ArcGIS.
Screenshot of the Software Center app. A menu on the left shows the "Applications" page is selected. "ArcGIS" has been entered into the search bar in the top right corner. A list of three ArcGIS related apps is shown in the center.
  3. Select the desired version of ArcGIS Pro you'd like to install. For compatibility reasons, the most recent version available will be whatever the most recent stable release was at the start of the current academic year.
  4. Click Install. Software Center will automatically download the necessary installation packages and then install ArcGIS Pro to your computer.

The ArcGIS installation package is fairly large and may take time, depending on the speed of your Internet connection. You can safely close the Software Center app without interrupting the download or installation process. You can also click the Installation status tab to check on the status of these processes. You can learn more about the Microsoft Software Center here.

Installing ArcGIS on a non-USS-managed or personal computer

If your computer isn't managed by USS, you can still download the ArcGIS Pro installer from the ArcGIS Online website and then install it yourself (assuming you have full administrative privileges on your machine):

  1. Go to the UO ArcGIS Online login page.
  2. Click the University of Oregon button.
    1. If you do not see a button labeled University of Oregon:
  4. Once logged in, click either your name or profile icon in the top-right corner, then My settings.
  5. On the My settings page, select the Licenses tab. Then scroll down to ArcGIS Pro and click Download ArcGIS Pro.
A screenshot of the licenses tab from the ArcGIS Online website. The "Licenses" tab in the left-hand menu is outlined in red. A list of available ArcGIS licenses is prominently displayed, with a link to download ArcGIS Pro also outlined in red.
  6. Click Download. You also have the option to choose a different language pack, if desired.

Your browser should commence the download of an executable (EXE) file. Once the download is complete, navigate to the location on your file system where this executable was downloaded and open it. Doing so will start the ArcGIS Installation Wizard – follow the prompts to finish installing ArcGIS Pro. For a complete and updated list of steps, visit the official Install ArcGIS Pro documentation.

Starting and Signing Into ArcGIS Pro

Once ArcGIS Pro has been downloaded and installed to your computer, you can start the ArcGIS Pro desktop app. Note that you will need to sign into ArcGIS Pro the first time you start the app (and each time thereafter, unless you check the box labeled Sign in automatically on the Sign In page).

  1. Open ArcGIS Pro:
  2. On the ArcGIS Sign In page:
    1. Click Your ArcGIS organization's URL,
    2. Enter uo-online into the form field that appears,
    3. Check the box next to Remember this URL,
    4. Click Continue.
  3. If you would like ArcGIS Pro to sign you in automatically whenever you start the desktop app, check the box in the lower-left corner labeled Sign in automatically.
  4. Select Click Here to Log into University of Oregon.
  5. When prompted, authenticate using your Duck ID and password.

After following these steps, the ArcGIS Pro desktop app should open with your user logged in and all appropriate licenses assigned to you.
