Overview
As part of the Canvas system there are opportunities to consider third-party learning applications, called LTIs. Below we provide information about making such a request.
Information
What is LTI?
Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) is a standard set of specifications for allowing third party learning applications to integrate with educational platforms. (LTI is a shorthand for such learning applications.) Third-party LTI integration allows the application to connect to Canvas.
How do I request an LTI?
Submit a service ticket from the Canvas Support Services page. In the form, select New Tool Request and fill in the required information.
What is the decision making process?
The decision making process varies, but typically it includes a discovery meeting with UO Online, accessibility and security vetting, governance review, testing, but in some cases it includes procurement, vendor demo, pilot, etc. You can find the sample decision making process below.
Sample LTI Decision Making Process
The below estimated times are based on a standard review and decision process. The estimates can overlap, or one stage may not move forward until a previous stage is completed. Of note is that for certain requests there will be other considerations that can extend turnaround times longer than estimated below.
- Request
- Discovery Meeting (time estimate: within 2 weeks of receiving request)
- UO Online will invite you to a discovery meeting to learn your business case, the details of the tool, etc.
- Initial Review (time estimate: 2 weeks)
- An initial review will be conducted to collect information and decide if the LTI (tool) will be processed further.
- Accessibility, Security, and Privacy Review (time estimate: 2 weeks - 3 months)
- Governance Review (time estimate: 1-3 weeks)
- Learning Technology of the Service Advisory Board (SAB) will review the LTI (tool) and make a recommendation.
- Test (time estimate: 2-4 weeks)
- The Learning Management Systems team will test the LTI (tool) in a test environment.
- Approval deployment
Note: The time frame to receive a decision depends on how complex the integration is, receiving requested information from the learning tool’s developer, the amount of risk that the LTI introduces into Canvas, and the cost of the tool. In some cases a limited-scope pilot testing is required as part of the review process. Please be advised the review process could take longer than the estimated time frame above.
When will I be notified of the final decision?
As soon as the LTI request passes the vetting process, you will be notified if it has been approved or not.
What happens if my LTI is not approved?
If your LTI request is not approved, you will be notified of the reasons that the LTI failed approval and alternate options will be offered (if applicable).
