Blocking an Email Address Using Proofpoint

Overview

Most email is filtered without you ever being aware that it is actually happening. If one or two slip through and into your inbox, you can manually block the sender. Here are some simple steps to do so.

Information

Steps:

  1. Determine the actual sender address of the message:
    • View the full email headers.
    • Find the phrase Return-Path:. The email address that follows it is the one you want. (That email address may be different than the "From:" email address.)
  2. Go to proofpoint.uoregon.edu
  3. Login using your Duck ID (email address without @uoregon.edu) and your Duck ID password
  4. In the bottom left corner, click on the Lists tab
  5. In the same column on the left side of the screen, click Blocked Senders List
  6. Once this highlights, click the New button that is directly to the right of the University of Oregon logo in the top right corner of the page
  7. At this point you have two options:
    • If you are receiving spam emails from only one address (name1@domain.com, for example) then you should enter this whole email address (the one you found in step 1 above). The system will now automatically block any email messages from this person.
    • On the off chance you are receiving spam emails from multiple address that all end with the same domain — name1@domain.com and name2@domain.com, for example — you should enter "domain.com". This will now block all email messages coming from anyone whose email is through domain.com

Once you have entered the address or domain, click the Save button and log out.
