Removing chat history in Teams

Summary

Removing chat history only affects your view of the conversation. Other participants will continue to see the chat and its messages. Users can also leave group chats and meeting chats when they no longer wish to participate.

Body

Overview

Microsoft Teams allows users to remove one-on-one conversations from their personal chat list. This can help reduce clutter and simplify chat management.

Removing chat history only affects your view of the conversation. Other participants will continue to see the chat and its messages. Users can also leave group chats and meeting chats when they no longer wish to participate. Microsoft refers to this feature as Remove chat history.

Note: Removing chat history does not delete a conversation for all participants. It only removes the chat from your own Teams chat list and search results. Other participants will continue to have access to the conversation.

Process

Remove a one-on-one chat

Teams desktop

  1. Open Microsoft Teams.
  2. Select Chat from the navigation menu.
  3. Locate the conversation you want to remove.
  4. Select More options (...) next to the chat.
  5. Select Remove chat history.
  6. Confirm the action if prompted.

Teams mobile

  1. Open the Microsoft Teams app.
  2. Tap Chat.
  3. Press and hold the conversation.
  4. Select Delete or Remove chat history.
  5. Confirm the action.

Leave a group or meeting chat

Group chats and meeting chats cannot be removed in the same way as one-on-one chats. Instead, you can leave the conversation.

  1. Open Chat in Teams.
  2. Select More options (...) next to the conversation.
  3. Select Leave.
  4. Confirm that you want to leave the chat.

Hide a chat instead

If you may need a conversation later, consider hiding it rather than removing it.

  1. Open Chat in Teams.
  2. Select More options (...) next to the conversation.
  3. Select Hide.

The conversation will no longer appear in your chat list but can be found again using Teams search.

Important notes

  • Removing chat history only affects your Teams account. Other participants retain access to the conversation.
  • Removed one-on-one chats are no longer available from your chat list or Teams search results.
  • To remove a specific message, delete the individual message instead of the entire chat.
  • Meeting organizers cannot leave their own meeting chats, although attendees can leave them.
