Overview

This article lists the different types of equipment that the USS Technology Service Desk has available to check out, along with a brief description of each type of item and what they're best suitable for.

List of Equipment

Digital Video Cameras

A digital video camera (often called a camcorder) is a device specifically designed to record moving images and sound, capturing video continuously rather than single photos. It’s best used for activities like events, vlogging, filmmaking, or sports recording, because it offers features such as smooth video stabilization, extended recording time, built-in audio capture, and easy handling, making it a good choice for people who want consistent, high-quality video footage.

Digital Voice Recorders

Digital voice recorders are portable devices designed to capture and store audio recordings clearly, with built-in microphones and simple controls for easy use. They're best used for recording lectures, meetings, interviews, or personal notes because they provides clear sound quality, long recording times, and quick playback, making them the best solution for people who need a reliable and convenient way to capture spoken information.

Drawing Tablets

A drawing tablet is a digital input device that lets you draw, sketch, and write by hand using a stylus on a flat surface, translating your movements into digital images on a computer or screen. It’s best used for digital art, graphic design, photo editing, and note-taking because it offers precise, natural control similar to pen and paper, making it extremely useful for artists, designers, and anyone who wants more accuracy and creativity than a mouse allows.

DLSR Cameras

A DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex) camera is a digital camera that uses a mirror system to let you see exactly what the lens sees through an optical viewfinder, and it captures high-quality images using a large sensor when you take a photo. It’s best used for photography where image quality and control matter—such as portraits, landscapes, action shots, and low-light scenes—because it offers interchangeable lenses and manual settings that give you more creative flexibility than basic cameras or smartphones.

Please be aware that our cameras only come with one lens.

iClicker Base Stations

Note: This item is only able to be checked out by faculty and staff. Additionally, there are limitations with usage and support for iClicker Base Stations. Please see our page on iClicker Transition for details on the usage limitations, and visit the official iClicker site for support.

An iClicker Base Station is a device that connects to an instructor’s computer and receives responses from student clickers or mobile devices during class, enabling real-time polling and interaction. Usually used in classroom settings to take attendance, conduct polls, and gather instant feedback, to help instructors engage students and quickly assess understanding during lectures.

LCD Projector

An LCD projector is a device that uses liquid crystal display (LCD) technology to project images, videos, or presentations from a computer or media source onto a large screen. It works best in classrooms, meetings, and presentations because it produces bright, clear visuals that are easy for groups to see, making it ideal for sharing information, slides, or videos with an audience.

Please be aware that our projectors do not come with a screen to project on, nor do we have portable screens to check out.

Logitech Meetup

The Logitech MeetUp is an all-in-one video conferencing camera designed for small meeting rooms, combining a wide-angle camera, microphones, and speakers into a single device for easy setup. It’s best used for team meetings, virtual collaboration, and video calls because it delivers clear video, wide room coverage, and built-in audio, making it ideal for groups who want a simple, high-quality conferencing solution without needing separate equipment.

Portable PA System

A portable PA (public address) system is a compact, all-in-one sound system that includes a powered speaker, with a wired handheld microphone and microphone stand, designed to amplify voices or music in different locations. Best when used for events like presentations, announcements, or small performances because it is easy to transport, quick to set up, and provides clear, amplified sound for small to medium-sized audiences.

Single-shot cameras

A single-shot camera (often called a point-and-shoot camera) is a simple digital camera designed to automatically handle focus, exposure, and other settings so you can quickly capture images with minimal effort using one press of the shutter button. It’s a good choice for everyday photography because it is lightweight, easy to carry, and requires little technical knowledge, making it ideal for people who want convenience over advanced control.

Tripods

Tripods are three-legged support stands designed to hold a camera or other device steady during use, helping to prevent movement and blur. It’s usually used for photography and video situations where stability is important—such as long exposures, low-light shooting, group photos, or recording video—because it keeps the camera fixed in place and allows for consistent, precise framing.
