Using the Email Migration Tool

Overview

This page provides instructions for moving your old email messages from Webmail to UOmail using the online migration tool.

Note: This migration tool will be available through Sunday, June 26.

After that, if you still want to move email from Webmail to UOmail, you can use an email program to connect to both accounts, and then manually drag messages from one to the other. Instructions are available at Webmail: Exporting Email.
Did you just opt in? Wait overnight and confirm you can log in at uomail.uoregon.edu before using this tool.

Who can use the migration tool?

Use this tool if your email account has transitioned from Webmail to UOmail and you want to keep your old messages.

You must take action within 180 days of your account transition. After that, you will lose access to your Webmail mailbox.

This applies to:

Using the migration tool

Preparing for migration

  1. Confirm that your account has transitioned to UOmail. Go to https://uomail.uoregon.edu and log in with your full email address (duckid@uoregon.edu). If you can log in, then you are ready to use the migration tool.
  2. Prepare for email migration by emptying your Trash/Deleted Items and Junk folders in Webmail.
  3. If you're on campus, skip to Starting the migration below. If you're off campus, connect to UO VPN (instructions: Getting Started with UO VPN).

Starting the migration

  1. Visit the online migration tool at https://migratemail.uoregon.edu.
  2. Enter your Duck ID (first part of your email address) and password.
    1. Note: If your password contains one of the following special characters — space, (, ), \, ", {, or non-English characters — you'll need to change it at Duck ID Self-Service to something without any of those characters.
  3. Recommended: Check the checkbox to delete messages from Webmail after they are successfully copied to UOmail. The tool will confirm that each message has been copied to UOmail before deleting it from Webmail.
  4. Click the button Migrate Webmail to UOmail.

Checking the migration status

  • When your migration completes, you will receive an email. This typically happens within a few hours but could take longer if your mailbox is large. You'll receive one of three messages about the migration process, indicating success, partial success, or failure. Please review the message you receive for further instructions.

Common Issues

If your email migration stops prematurely or causes error messages, you can always go back to the migration tool and run it again. You won't create duplicates of your email messages. The following can cause problems with migration:

  • Large attachments: If you have any email attachments larger than 20 MB (perhaps in your Drafts folder), you will not be able to move them to UOmail, which has a 20 MB limit for attachments.  If you need to keep a file larger than this, you can move it to One Drive or Dropbox
  • Folder names: Spaces at the beginning of folder names will cause the migration to fail. Change those folder names to remove the initial spaces.
  • Password errors: If you mistype your Duck ID password, just go back to the migration tool and try again. If your password contains one of the following special characters — space, (, ), \, ", {, or non-English characters — you'll need to change it at Duck ID Self-Service to something without any of those characters.
